Buckle up people. This is the truth about your sugar cravings.
I am hoping to open your eyes to the physiological reason your body craves sweets and what you can do about it in order to be happy and healthy.
We’ve all been there. Those moments when you just HAVE to have something sweet. You can’t stand it. You will go out of your way to find anything in the house (AKA cupboard rummaging) or go all the way to the store to get your sugary fix.
Think about it. How many times have we eaten a HUGE meal, only to be craving our sugary desert to “top it off” after our meal? Our stomachs are full, and we are still looking for the sweets. In comes the old adage, “There’s always room for dessert!”
And chocolate. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say, “I can’t LIVE without chocolate!”
What about other “carbs”? Boy do we crave many sugary foods in disguise! This includes things like pizza, chips, pasta, popcorn, crackers, and bread.
Why do we get those cravings? Why does our body say, “EAT SUGARY SWEETS!”, even when we aren’t physically hungry?
You might ask yourself, “How can overcome this feeling?” or, ” If I crave sweets does that mean I have no will power, or that I’m a bad person?”
Well, here comes the truth…
The truth about sugar cravings is this: Your body is starving for glucose.
Yes, the plain and simple fact and reason for your need for a sugar fix is because you aren’t feeding your body enough carbohydrates to sustain its glucose (energy) needs.
You are not a bad person, and you don’t lack will power. Your brain and body just don’t have enough carbohydrates for fuel to run on.
The truth is, every single cell in the human body, including brain cells, run on glucose. We need glucose for fuel so every one of our cells can function. If we don’t eat enough carbohydrates, our body will tell us, “EAT SUGAR!” and unfortunately, many of us run straight for the processed, refined, sugary “treats” and candy to get our fix, which only leaves us unsatisfied after a short time and our body is not truly running at its optimal level due to a lack of vitamins and minerals and the overload of chemicals and preservatives.
So what can we do about it? What is the healthy solution to our sugary cravings? How do we stop our unhealthy sugar cravings and make healthier habits?
You’re not going to believe this, but I’m not lying when I say…
The solution is this: Eat HIGH Carbohydrate, Sugary, Low Fat, Whole Foods!
There is a reason we all have a “sweet tooth” and that sweet, sugary foods taste good to our tongues. Carbs are what every healthy body craves and needs!
When we eat high sugar foods, our bodies release a feel good chemical in the brain called serotonin. That’s why we feel happy and euphoric after we binge on sweet treats. Unfortunately, those processed sweets we usually reach for are full of unhealthy fats and chemicals that make us fat and lethargic, and that sugar “high” we get is only temporary. We need a constant and high amount of low fat, carbohydrate foods in our diet in order to switch our metabolisms into high gear and give our bodies exactly what they need so we can have that “feel good” feeling all day long. But those carbs CANNOT come from processed or refined “food” products.
If your body isn’t fed enough carbohydrates, your body will metabolize and convert your muscle tissue into fuel. This means you will lose muscle mass in order to maintain glucose energy levels in your body. This is not healthy, and contributes to an array of other health problems. We need to feed our bodies the healthy sugars, from whole plant foods.
So what kinds of foods are low fat, HIGH Carbohydrate, Whole Plant Foods?
Fruits and Vegetables!
Here are some examples:
Bananas, Oranges, Dates, Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Lemons, Limes, Grapefruit, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Kiwi, Persimmons, Papayas, Starfruit, Figs, Apples, Mango, Grapes, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Zucchini, Carrots, Broccoli, Asparagus, Cauliflower, Peppers, Spinach, Lettuces, Potatoes, Rice…etc.
If you eat enough of these foods (enough calories) your sugary cravings will DISAPPEAR!
Honestly! The truth is, our bodies need large amounts of Fruits and Vegetables to thrive. When we feed our body the nourishing foods it craves, it becomes healthier and happier, and stops screaming at us to binge on unhealthy processed sugary snacks.
Try it! Your Mission: For 1 week, eat as many calories as you can fit in your belly of high carbohydrate whole plant foods, and skip the processed junk. See how good you feel, and see if those cravings start to taper off. 🙂

Don’t forget to eat ENOUGH calories! If you under eat on calories your body will go into starvation mode and you will end up back on the binge cycle of junky “food” items that will not increase your health and vitality. You have to eat a LOT of these foods because they are naturally lower in calories. Don’t restrict! Eat as much as you care for! Enjoy the abundance! I recommend 2000-2500 calories for women with low to average fitness levels and 2500-3000 calories for men with low to average fitness levels. If your fitness levels are higher, increase your caloric intake.
So stop eating the cookies, cakes, candies, pastries, soda pops, sugar infused drinks, donuts, milk chocolate, ice cream, milkshakes, cereal bars, pizza, chips, and unnatural high-fructose corn syrup, chemical laden “treats” and start feeding your body what it really wants, high carbohydrate, high nutrient, high water, high fiber, high vitamin, all natural, healthy fruits and vegetables!
Feed your sugar cravings the healthy way!
