Do you love to travel? I do too! 🙂
The hard thing about traveling is that it can be a challenge to stay healthy at the same time. When you are out of your comfort zone, it can be hard to resist fast and cooked food convenience.
The good news is, there are easy ways you can not completely blow your healthy lifestyle on the go.
Here are 5 Easy Raw Food Travel Tips to keep you healthy on your adventures:
1. Bring Your Own Food!
You don’t have to get fancy to make sure you have healthy snacks.
Fruit is fast food! Bring a big supply of easy to store, easy to eat fruit on the go. Bananas, Apples, Dates, Dried Fruit, Mangos, and Grapes are great traveling foods.
We did this on our recent trip to Kentucky. We stocked the car full of Bananas, Dates, Mangos, and Grapes so we didn’t even have to stop on our way except to use the bathroom. We just reached in the backseat and grabbed a quick snack when we got hungry. Easy!
2. Bring Your Favorite Tools!
Can you live without your daily smoothie or juice? If not, just go ahead, pack up that blender or juicer. It might seem silly, but you have to tell yourself that your health is worth it! If you have a favorite fruit bowl, knife (if not on an airplane), peeler, blender, juicer…etc…then bring it with you!
If you are planning to stay with friends or family, great! You can set up in their kitchen and make them your favorite recipes with your favorite tools and teach them how to stay healthy and entertain them at the same time! 🙂
If you are planning to stay at a hotel, call ahead and ask if they have a mini fridge. You can stock up your greens and fruit and then blend away! Just be sure to clean up any spills (bathrooms are great for this since they have a sink and easy tile clean-up). Friendly etiquette: don’t turn your vitamix blender on late at night and wake up your hotel neighbors. If they don’t have a mini-fridge, invest in a plug-in cooler. We love ours! It plugs into the car cigarette lighter or a regular wall outlet. Great for keeping greens and berries cool on long trips, storing in hot hotel rooms, or taking on a picnic.
3. Find Local Produce & Raw Food or Vegan Restaurants!
Without fail, every town has a grocery store. In the summer, most have farmers markets. Go ahead, find some local yummy fruits and veggies, and enjoy them on the go. Stock up your mini-fridge or your friend or family’s refrigerator with your healthy delicacies. Cook your friends a healthy dinner as thank you for their hospitality, or find easy-to-eat and prepare fruits and veggies to eat at your hotel or local park.
The internet age has made finding your favorite foods easier than ever. My 2 favorite resources are Yelp and Happy Cow. They both let you search for local restaurants in many countries. You can search by type of food, location, and they give restaurant location and menu information as well as reviews, pictures, and websites. Super useful! I’ve got both applications on my iPhone and use them all the time.
Before we went to Lexington, Kentucky, I found Squeeze A Raw Experience and planned to check it out while we were there. It was awesome! A cute little juice bar with raw, organic, vegan snacks and drinks and friendly people. We were excited to find a restaurant like this, so we made it a point to go check it out, and we were so happy we did!
4. Plan Ahead!
Are you traveling to a new city, new country, or new culture? Get online before hand and research the local foods, grocery, restaurants, and lodging amenities so you can plan your meals ahead of time and be excited to try new things or be prepared by bringing your own. Don’t be afraid to call and ask about menus or search for times and locations of farmers markets and orchards. Don’t wait until you are there and hungry, because then you will get desperate and make an unhealthy choice. Make it fun!

5. Be Flexible!
Don’t expect perfection. You may not be able to eat as many raw fruit or veg meals as you would like to, but don’t stress about it. If you find yourself eating out or having cooked food, be smart about what you choose on the menu. Pick plant based options; low fat if possible. Don’t be shy! Ask your waiter or waitress what vegetarian or vegan options are available, even if it doesn’t look like it on the menu. Ask if they can substitute items or take items out of certain dishes. All is not lost, you can still make good choices and have a satisfying meal too. Be the healthy example for your friends and family. Try new things! If you eat one meal that isn’t so great, be determined to do better for the next meal. Always have fruit for breakfast if possible, and drink lots of water! Traveling can be tiring and dehydrating. Make your trip more enjoyable by keeping hydrated and giving your body fruits and vegetables to maintain your energy and happiness.
